ARE YOU RADICAL?

“Radical simply means
‘GRASPING THINGS AT THE ROOT.’ ”

On the environment
Climate Anxiety?
Panic?
What if we told you that BIPOC have been actively fighting this battle long before it was on modern (white) environmentalists’ radar. We want to be careful about how we engage in conversations about environmentalism, misplaced responsibility, and white saviorism.
In this space, while we encourage individuals to be conscious within their means, we know that the ultimate fault falls upon weak government initiatives and corporate greed.

on feminism
Whom is your Feminism centered around?
Does your Feminism include Indigenous women, Trans women, Undocumented women, Black women, Unhoused women, Sex Workers, Disabled women, Fat women, Asian women, Imprisoned women, and the rights of all people with a vagina?
Does your Feminism focus on dismantling the Patriarchy and the power systems that uphold it?
Or does your Feminism result in you being a part of the power system - allowing you to maintain power over others?
Our goal is not cute slogans, feel-good motivational propaganda to keep you hustling, nor is it seeking the same positions of power that white men have used to exploit all people.
Our goal is no-bullshit equity for everyone.

on lgbtq+ rights
In this space “normal” is a lie created and enforced by European colonizers.
Sexuality is a spectrum.
Gender is a spectrum.
Long before colonizers stole the lands that they invaded, Indigenous cultures all around the world recognized Sexual Diversity. It is not the new, modern phenomenon that we have been conditioned to believe it is. Sexual Diversity was repressed and stolen from our histories.
How we view gender and sexuality are solely based on social constructs…
You can identify or choose not to identify how ever you would like. Gatekeeping is just another way of maintaining power structures and we are not here for it.
We are here to create a future where human rights and safety are experienced by ALL.

on capitalism
We said what we said.
But alas, we live in reality and the reality is that Capitalism is likely not going away anytime soon.
However, we can look to success in other countries as a framework on how Socialism can be used to create more equitable economies.
We know that Capitalism is reliant on unequal power systems. Its inherent nature is to set up humans to compete for money, resources, and power. As is the case in the US, once certain people come into power, it is almost impossible for others to compete.
Monopolies.
Worker exploitation.
Means of production inherited over generations.
Environmental Degradation.
Wealth Inequality.
Whether it be through legislation or revolution, we know that dismantling Capitalism as it currently exists in our country is the solution to many of the social problems we are facing.
We ride at dawn y’all ;)

on veganism
Unpopular Opinion: Veganism is a Western social construct and our perspectives on it should be challenged.
Plant-based diets are not a new fad or revolutionary idea to most of the world. We’ve noticed quite a bit of self-righteous verbiage, particularly in white-vegan spaces.
We’re not here to do that.
Food systems are complex, personal diets are complex, and for us, Veganism should be about attempting to do the least amount of harm to animals, the environment, and other humans.
Labels with strict expectations can be limiting and uninviting. They also don’t leave much room for nuanced conversations about Western responsibility of industrial agriculture, nor the colonization of Indigenous agriculture and conservation.
Veganism should be intersectional.
Veganism should not be gatekept, especially by groups of people so new to plant-based lifestyles.
To be clear: Westernized Veganism will not be provided a high horse here.

On voting
“I’m not superstitious but I am a little stitious.”
-Michael Scott, The Office
We get it. Voting alone is not going to get us where want to go. However, voting, especially locally, might directly impact the most vulnerable of our communities.
I guess it’s just a risk we are not willing to take. We want to take advantage of every opportunity we have to move even an inch closer to our goals.
Some might argue that partaking in the broken system does more damage than good, but until we fight for and establish another one, it’s kinda all we have to work with.
If you have more ideas/ solutions/ perspectives on this topic feel free to message us!

On Racism
Remember this black square?
We figured it was most fitting.
The movements of 2020 were what sparked the idea for The Radical Beet. How do we move from performative activism to persistent, long-lasting allyship?
The first part is continuing to show up, continuing our education in anti-racism work, and continuing to listen and follow the lead of Black community leaders.
We want to be a safe space for all POC, that being said, anti-Black rhetoric will not be tolerated by anyone. If a nerve is hit, take a breath, and decenter yourself.
Orange County in particular benefits greatly from the systems of white supremacy. We are not going to ignore our roles in these systems, nor ignore the role of white supremacy as a tool of capitalism.
